Google for Jobs Could Save You Time on Your Next Job Search

Google launched its new Google for Jobs feature today, which uses their machine learning Cloud API to put job listings from all the major job service sites in one easy-to-search place.

When you start looking for a new gig, it usually involves opening tab after tab of different job listing sites, then typing in a search query, followed by endless scrolling until you find something worthwhile. Well, Google thought that was a waste of time. They’ve partnered up with job services like Monster, LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, Glassdoor, Indeed, WayUp, DirectEmployers, Facebook, and more to put all those listings in one place.

Go to the Google Search page on desktop or mobile, enter a search like “jobs near me,” or “IT jobs,” and you’ll be shown a massive list of every job that matches your query. Then you can tinker with various settings to make your search more specific.

You don’t actually apply for these jobs through Google’s tool, however. You’re shown the complete job listing, what kind of work it is (full-time, part-time, contract, etc.), the date it was posted, and company ratings from sites like Indeed, Glassdoor, Kununu, and Careerbliss. Some listings will even show the commute time if you’re logged into your Google account and have your home address included in your profile. If you see a job you like, there will be a button that says “View on [origin site],” which will direct you to the place where you can actually apply. Sometimes it’s a job service site like Monster or CareerBuilder, and sometimes it’s the company web site. If you’ve ever used Google Flights to search for bookings, it’s kind of like that.

You can also customize your job search with various filters to narrow things down even further. You can filter the job category (and search multiple categories at once), job title, date it was posted, the type of work, location, company type, or keep your search within one employer. So, say you want to search for a full-time job in Computers and IT, with the title of manager, at a manufacturing company located in your city, that’s just been posted in the last three days. You can do that.

Better yet, you can make that search, then set up alerts for any new jobs posted that fit into those parameters. I tested out the alerts function and was sent an email for a new job posting the instant it went up.

Google isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel with this new feature, but they are greasing it up by using their AI to gather all the listings it can find, remove duplicate postings, and hide jobs that are irrelevant to you. Even so, they have no interest in competing with other job service sites—it’s strictly a search tool. After all, Google for Jobs wouldn’t work without the collaboration of other job sites. The feature is young, but as Google for Jobs gets populated with more listings over time, there won’t be much of a reason not to at least start your job search with it. You’re almost guaranteed to save yourself some time.
