Can A Boss Forbid Employees From Posting Their Resume Online?
Recently, I got the following message via email:
“I’m a manager at a mid-sized company. My boss has forbidden employees from having a searchable resume on any of the job boards. I have made the difficult decision that it is time to move on. Most every job that I have had was a result of a recruiter finding my resume on a job board. My questions are: 1. Is an employer allowed to forbid an employee from posting their resume? 2. What are other ways for me to get noticed by recruiters?”
The Boss Can’t Forbid You. But, He Can Fire You
While it is your right to post your resume wherever you want to, the boss has made it clear that doing this will result in punishment. Most likely in the form of firing you. That said, I wouldn’t suggest posting your resume on job boards any more. While you might have gotten your job that way in the past, there are a lot of scams and unwanted calls and emails that come from posting your credentials in places like this today. It’s just not worth the hassle. Instead, here’s what I propose.
Step 1: Flip the “I’m available” switch on LinkedIn.
If you go to your privacy settings in LinkedIn, you’ll see a new feature where you can secretly signal to employers that you are open to new opportunities. This feature makes sure that it isn’t visible to your current employer.
Step 2: Properly optimize your LinkedIn profile.
While there are over 500 million profiles on LinkedIn, it’s estimated that less than half of them are properly optimized for recruiter searches. Recruiters pay a special fee to be able to search for candidates on the platform using keywords. These keywords are related to the skill sets they’ve been tasked to find. The more optimized your profile is, the more likely you’ll show up in the top of recruiter searches and get contacted for job opportunities.
Step 3: Create a ‘bucket list’ of ideal employers. Then, find and follow potential employers on Glassdoor.
Most people don’t know Glassdoor is the second largest job site on the internet, and currently on track to become number one. It’s growing at a crazy rate because it offers insights into what it would be like to work at companies via reviews from current and former employees. When you see an employer you’re interested in working for, you should follow them on Glassdoor. Why? The company will then send you email updates about them, including job opportunities. The best part? Studies show candidates who apply through Glassdoor are seen by employers as 2X better fit than candidates who apply through other job sites. Which means, you can get ahead of the competition when you focus on following the companies you most want to work for.

While the technology above can assist you in a secret search for work, it isn’t what will ultimately get you the job.
