Ask a Hiring Expert: How Do I Deal With a Gap in My Resume?

Tuesday, October 31st, 2017 - Resume

Welcome to Ask a Hiring Expert, a new advice column where Adecco Staffing President Joyce Russell answers all of your questions about landing the next job.

Dear Joyce,

I am job hunting and I am worried how potential employers will look at the gap in my resume. How do I explain it in a way that makes me come across well?

In today’s hiring market, it’s not uncommon for people to take time off, and employers are much more open to resume gaps. Taking time to step back and assess your career objectives, spend some time traveling, explore a new field – whatever your reasoning – is nothing to hide during the job hunt.

In fact, the best thing you can do to win over a prospective employer is to be upfront about any gaps so they aren’t left to wonder. Use the opportunity to explain something valuable that came out of your time off and how it contributes to you being in the room with them today!
