A word of caution for HRs: More than 10% of job applicants in India lie on their resume and 50% submit fake documents

In India, more than ten per cent of the job applicants lie or provide false information on their resume while applying for jobs.

These include details given on education, criminal record, and
even their residential address.

Before applying for the job,
out of the total number of people who share false information, 10 per cent
turned out to be faking about completing a course while 5 per cent were from
fake universities and almost 50 per cent had submitted their fake documents, as
per the data collected by First Advantage – the largest global background
screening agency in India.

While this data is quite lesser in comparison to other countries
like the US, which has around 25 per cent discrepancies, experts observe this could
be because the number of checks carried out in India are low.

“Developed countries like the US, New Zealand and Australia have a
high discrepancy rate because of the awareness among employers there. In India,
background verification is a nascent industry with growing need and awareness.
The number of checks carried out in India are significantly lower, some
employers believe that background screening as an additional unnecessary
expense,” said Purushotam Savlani, SVP and Managing Director of First Advantage
India.

According to the data shared by the agency, the discrepancy versus
verified percentage for 2011, 2012 and 2013 was at 10 per cent. In 2014, it had
risen to 10.5 per cent. In 2015, it had further risen to 11.6 per cent. During
2016 it fell to 11.1 per cent and further to 10.6 per cent, in the first half
of 2017.

Background screening or background check is the process of
verifying information of a prospective employee that comprises the practice of
compiling criminal records, commercial records, and financial records of an
individual or an organization.

These checks are often conducted by employers as a means of
judging a job candidate’s past mistakes, character, fitness, and to
identify potential hiring risks for safety and security reasons. However, it is
not followed much in India.
